A bit of a Pickle!

Hey guys! :):up:

About a week ago my Win7 desktop started doing something worrying.

I'll dump my specs before getting into it;
  • Windows 7 Home-Premium 32-Bit
  • BIOSTAR G31D-M7 (Default BIOS)
  • Corsair VS450 450W 80+ PSU
  • Pentium Dual Core E5400 2.7Ghz
  • 2GB DDR2 800mhz RAM (DIMM) (1 Stick)
  • ATI Radeon HD 4650
  • ALFA AWUS036H Adapter
  • USB Keyboard/Mouse

OK so basically, when I press the power button it appears to power up, my case fan starts running as usual, but I can hear a revving fan inside the case, which I've concluded to be my GPU fan as all other fans seems to run completely fine when I checked.

This doesn't happen EVERY time, in fact it mostly happens when I've had it turned off for several hours, but it revs up like it's trying to reach a certain RPM which eventually it reaches after a random amount of attempts and it goes through BIOS and into windows fine.

Now, once it gets into windows everything will seem to be ok, but eventually, it might take 10 minutes or 2 hours but it will reboot itself with no error codes (screen suddenly goes blank, fans revs and it goes through BIOS just like turning it on would do).

I've tried a number of things;
  • Installed a new PSU. (The old one was a 250w that was probably running on 50% efficiency anyway)
  • Reseated HDD/RAM/GPU
  • Replaced the old CMOS battery
  • Updated as many hardware drivers as it needed (GPU/CHIPSET/LAN/WIFI etc.)
  • Ran startup repair (even though I didn't think it would do anything, and it didn't)
  • Cleaned out the dust, now everything is running under 40-50c, so it's clearly not an overheating issue.

I'm almost stumped at this point. I have 2 things in mind that it could possibly be at the moment. I think it could either be my RAM stick going bad, or something shorting out like my power button (I saw a case where a guys power button cables were quite old and caused random restarts). I also saw a case where a person's RAM was causing similar symptoms to mine, fans revving before POST and random restarts etc. which is why I also think it may be that issue.

Anybody been down a similiar road? Any advice?

Thanks! :o
