Twin OS clash

I wish to set up my latest PC for Flight Sim work. To that end I wish to split my SSD into two sectors and have two OS's, WIN 7 and XP.
Under WIN 7, I shrunk the 256 SSD sector holding the WIN 7 OS and attempted to load XP onto the spare second sector. I know that one should have the older OS loaded first, but that is not sacrosanct and I would use a boot loader to switch between OS's. My second 500Gb HD would then be used to store all my apps and current work before storage off site.
However, when I went to load XP it flipped into the blue screen of dire warnings and said that it had stopped Windows because a problem had been detected etc etc.( I'm sure you've all seen it, but I have more details if required)
In the event that I should have loaded XP first, I would like to remove WIN 7 and start again, but don't know how do delete an OS that is in use. It sounds an illogicality!
Where, what or how have I gone wrong?
