Upgrading from Windows 7 to 8 - driver question

$

Hi,

I'm planning on upgrading my Windows 7 system to Windows 8 and need some advice on drivers.

My Windows 7 system is made by HP and comes with their drivers. There doesn't appear to be Windows 8 versions for some of the devices, so I'm guessing any clean install of Windows 8 will result in the installation of Microsoft drivers.

I use external USB drives a lot for backing up photos. I also use a hardware calibration device for editing photos on my monitor. Would the Microsoft drivers be reliable and perform well for USB devices like my external hard drives?

Thanks for any advice offered.

Problem with string comparison in batch script

Greetings

I am attempting to write a batch script that uses a program called Mailsend to send an email. The script then examines Mailsend's log output to determine if the email was successfully sent.
This is what I have so far:
Code:

mailsend1.17b14.exe -to <snip personal info> -log temp.txt -attach test.txt
.\Tail\Tail -1 temp.txt > temp2.txt
Del temp.txt
Set /p Message=<temp2.txt

Set Message=%Message:~26%

Set Cmess=Mail sent successfully

Echo %Message%
Echo %Cmess%

If "Message"=="Cmess" ( Echo Correct ) Else ( Echo Wrong )

The first line sends the email. The second and third use a program called Tail to delete all lines except the last one from the log file (the last line contains the output I'm looking for). I then assign the contents of the log file to a variable then truncate the first 26 characters (date and time info that I don't need). I then create a second variable with the desired output then compare the two.

The comparison at the end is where I'm having problems. Every time I run the script, the last line I get is "Wrong" (i.e. the "Echo Wrong" command is executed meaning "Message" does not equal "Cmess"). This happens even when the email was sent successfully. I've tried various things and I haven't managed to get the "Echo Correct" command to ever execute, even when the output of the two Echo command just before is exactly the same. I've even tried changing the "Set Cmess" line to:
Code:

Set /p Cmess=<temp2.txt
Set Cmess=%Cmess:~26%

...and the output for the comparison is still "wrong". I can only think that there must be something wrong with how I structured the comparison.

Can anyone help me get this script to work or help me script a means of checking the log file for "Mail sent successfully"?

If it interests anyone, this is what the log file contains if an email gets sent successfully:
Quote:

07-Jun-2014 08:17:28.172: mailsend v@(#) mailsend v1.17b14
07-Jun-2014 08:17:33.011: Mail sent successfully

Today while watching youtube I noticed a lot of slow down while watching a video and sound stuttering also the computer was acting a bit slow. so I opened up windows task manager and saw that the cpu usage was at 100% I thought no way does watching a youtube video take 100% power of the cpu. So I went ahead and followed the some advice from here http://forums.techguy.org/general-se...-problems.html cleaned out a lot of junk. but the cpu usage was still high. not sure what to do now, some help would be great:)

OS won't boot from C:

Hello, so my OS won't boot from my C: drive when I specifically ask it to.

I have two HDDs, B: and C:. Both have the same version of Windows 7 installed on them. I want to format B: and copy the contents of C: onto it but I can't do this as B: is currently running Windows. So I should just be able to change the boot order or specify in my boot manager that I want to load from C:, but neither of these work. No matter what, even if I specifically tell it to boot from C: it always loads from B: instead.

How can I get it to boot from C:?

Hi

I recently extended my c: drive with minitool partition wizard on a laptop I have as the primary drive was out of room (dell machine with only 50gb primary).

Since then at start up and when trying to open lots of programs I get the error

(example for viber)

Viber.exe - Bad Image
c:\Windows\System32\d3d9.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the orginal instlalaation media or contact your system administraotr or software vendor for support

I've tried installing the latest version of direct x and also manually replacing the d3d9.dll file in windows\system32 with no luck

Any ideas?

No sound through HDMI, already set to default

Hi,

I have a GTX570 which I use to connect my PC to my TV via HDMI. For two years or so everything has been fine until I recently returned from holiday and the picture still works but there is no sound. I have googled the problem and the usual answer is to set the TV as default in audio properties. I had already done this and it is set as default (shows full name of TV).

When I click test the green bar goes up and down to show sound is being played but it just doesn't come through the TV. Another solution I have found is putting a cable between the sound card and the graphics card through SPDIF but this doesn't seem to be required as it has always worked without this.

Please can you help I am pulling my hair out.

Dear members,

Got this old Acer laptop from my dad he pronounced dead. I re-installed Windows, used eraser tools, anti-malware, anti-virus. First month it seemed to help. Now however the laptop is very slow, blows a lot of air and often freezes. Any advice?

Solved: 'no audio devices' after installing audio driver

$

Hi,

I have just installed the audio driver for my motherboard, restarted the computer and it seems that driver doesn't do anything at all. I have the speaker icon in the tray bar with a red 'x' on it, and it says: "No Audio Output Device is installed". Why is that? I tried the driver that's on the motherboard CD and also the one from Realtek's website, and while they are different versions, the problem is identical.

Please advise. :)

dbrm app tray reminder

Hi, my PC shuts down most days without warning - sometimes several times. It has done this since new and Dell have not been able to solve it. When I reboot I get a pop-up with the 'dbrm app tray reminder' title although it doesn't remain for very long. Dell replaced the mother board and the graphics card but it made no difference. Any thoughts? Many thanks for your help.

Acer Aspire 5552G: Deleted language pack - BIOS, can't change boot pri order

$

Hi dear!

I got an old computer that I used for perhaps one year ago, and what I did to destroy it was to delete the language pack somehow. Now I would like to try to fix it, as I actually need it. But I do have some issues, maybe someone of you guys know. I can start it up all the way to where I choose between safe mode, and so on - then I get the blue screen that lasts the whole 2 seconds, amazingly enough.

I have Windows 7 Installation, that's all I have. When I start up my PC also says two fix the problem:
1 Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2 Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3 Click "Repair your computer".

Had this been as simple as the system claims, I would have been fixing it myself asap. The problem is that when I put the CD, restart the pc is also nothing happens. So I've searched up a bit, where you can do so in a way pc starts via cd so I can install windows 7 The problem is when I enter the BIOS I can choose between "Information, Main, Security, Boot and Exit ". When I go to BOOT it says "Boot priority order" and that's the list:
1 IDE0 WD
2 IDE1: PIONNER DVD-RW
3 USB FDD:
4 Network Boot: LEGACY PCI DEVICE
5 USB HDD
6 USB CD / DVD ROM:

I can not do anything here, no matter what I press. It's sort of gray text, what I can do about is completely black. So it turns out that they are locked. What should I do ..

Have also tried ALT + F10, the Acer eRecovery Management. When trying to complete recovery where it says "Please complete operating system setup process before doing system recovery can not start up".

So all this recovery stuff on Acer PCs are the totally meaningless. Anybody have any idea how to fix this giant problem, is not going to send it to repair - does not guarantee it. Would have been cool to getting this fixed. Do not have as much bearing on the PC, so if you first help me - please do not use advanced computer geeky words, you get my point I think!

Random crashing, safe mode postpones it

This is a rather weak laptop I've had for about 2 years, but I'm dead broke and can't afford a new one. I've had no prior issues with it crashing, until earlier today it spontaneously bluescreened. There was a loud screeching sound that accompanied it.

When I boot normally after one of these crashes, a few seconds after logging in it crashes again. If I go into safe mode, it seems like it takes a few hours longer.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? The blue screen goes by too fast for me to get any meaningful info from it. Maybe it could be a memory leak of some sort? My last resort will be to restore with a boot partition, but that might not fix it.

Transferring files from Windows XP to Windows 7

My cousin only 45 passed away from cancer a year ago. He sent me lots of messages and attached files of his photos and music which now have a great deal of meaning to us.

I've been wanting to restore and transfer these files to my new computer. The messages were previously on Outlook Express and they failed to transfer using Windows Easy transfer. I intend to recycle the old computer. Could I remove the old hard disk and access it by some hardware method? Unfortunately the keyboard and graphics card on the old computer are damaged so it seems that removing the hard disk and inserting it into a portable drive unit may be the answer. What kind of hardware would I need? Never having done this I'd really appreciate some advice from anyone.

Black screen during boot

Hi I have been having this strange problem with my PC lately and I'm unsure on what it could be. Whenever I boot up my system, the system gets past the "starting windows" boot screen and just before the main desktop logon screen for windows is supposed to appear, the monitor goes to black like the graphics card cable to the monitor has been pulled out. Causing me to hit the reset switch to try and reboot. This does this every time I try to boot to windows, except for when I instead tap f8 on boot. Which then gives me an option besides the regular safe mode etc, to repair my computer. So I choose that and then I use the system restore option to go back to an earlier time and restart my system. After doing that it boots up normally to windows. I have checked the cables to the monitor to check if they are properly connected, which they are. Any ideas?

All audio devices suddenly stopped working

$

Both audio playback through the integrated sound card, and recording through a USB microphone stopped working suddenly - cannot play back or record anything and no application software can find the audio devices.

In device manager both devices are listed, enabled and working properly. If I launch an audio track the sound bars levels against the device do not move. The speaker next to the clock is present and does not have a red cross through it.

The first thing I did was do a system restore to a couple of days previously when it was all working - still nothing. So this eliminates drivers etc being an issue.

I have checked the BIOS to make sure audio is enabled and set to automatic - it is.

The Windows audio manager service is enabled and set to automatic.

Cannot be the integrated sound interface - Dell XPS 430 - because the USB microphone, which is not connected to the sound interface, does not work either.

It is like all audio functions have stopped being accessible to software applications, although Windows 7 Ultimate 64 sees them as present, fully enabled and working.

Any ideas please?

Thanks.

Solved: Backup of running win7 system on SSD, to another HDD.

Hello.

This is what I would like to do:

- Back up (make image or basicly copy) WHOLE SSD DISC of size cca 150GB with RUNNING SYSTEM WIN7 64 on it, and copy it to another HDD I have in my machine, which have size of 1TB. So those whole SSD with system will easily fit into there.
- Once this is done, I would like to set up regular differential back up of this I have just made, lets say every two weeks, via scheduler.

I heard native windows 7 back up program can do this so I dont need to buy any other third party software. However Looking at it, Im lost with how to do that. If anyone could provide me short step by step turtorial, I would celebrate him :D

Thank you.

PS: Please DONT recommend me any third party back up programs, because I would like to use win7 back up for this.
